Dr Andrea Juan is a Senior Research Specialist in the Inclusive Economic Development (IED) research division at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and is part of the Context of Learning working group.

Her research interests include analysis of policymaking and implementation within the South African education sector. Beyond this, Dr Juan is extensively involved in the evaluation of South African learner achievement in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), which is administered in four-year cycles. She is particularly interested in the contextual and non-cognitive factors, such as attitude and self-efficacy beliefs, which impact academic achievement.

Dr Juan majored in Legal Studies and Psychology during her undergraduate degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). As a result of her academic record, she was awarded an Andrew Mellon Fellowship to study public policy in 2003. She then went on to attain Honours, Master?s and PhD degrees in Policy and Development Studies from UKZN, ultimately graduating in 2015. Her doctoral thesis focused on governance and policy management in South African educational Further Education and Training institutions. Through the fellowship, Dr Juan has also undergone advanced training in monitoring and evaluation, policy analysis and policy formulation.

Dr Juan was previously employed in the Teacher Development Unit of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education as a researcher. In 2008, she joined the HSRC as a Master?s intern and has progressed to Research Specialist. Dr Juan has been involved in conducting a number of research projects for the national departments of Science and Technology, Labour, Basic Education, and Higher Education and Training. Aside from her role as lead researcher in the TIMSS project, she is also the co-Principal investigator of a longitudinal cohort study exploring transformative leadership among young Africans funded by the MasterCard Foundation.

Dr Juan's publication record illustrates her commitment to communicating the results of her research to a wide range of people. For example, she is an editor of the TIMSS Newsletter, which aims to highlight key findings and their relationship to the South African context in an easily read format. She has also communicated research findings through blogs, opinion pieces and infographics in order to make her research more accessible to the public. Her academic publications include the authoring and co-authoring of journal articles, policy briefs and conference presentations.
