A protocol to evaluate the I am intervention aimed at interrupting underage drinking in South Africa

Abstract

The aim of the current study is to evaluate the I am intervention using a mixed methods approach. For the quantitative component, we will use a non-experimental pre-test/post-test design. This data will consider any changes on key indicators between baseline and endline. To augment the quantitative data, we will use various qualitative approaches (in-depth interviews, research diaries, focus group discussions and photovoice) to understand stakeholder perspectives, experiences and reflections on the intervention and its impact on underage drinking across the intervention delivery period. Essentially, the study intends to determine the feasibility and utility of the interventions, and the three components, in relation to underage drinking, to identify which components were perceived as most effective, and to identify areas for improvements to the interventions.
