The 2021 Social Unrest in South Africa: Primary survey-based research

Abstract

With reference to the unrest in KZN and Gauteng and its far-reaching social and economic impacts on the country, this research is to better understand the unprecedented events, and develop future scenarios based on this insight, including considerations of possible long-term social and technical interventions to monitor and lower the risks of similar social unrests. This represents a crucial baseline undertaking that would serve as an evidence base for informing decisions relating to the implementation of a short-, medium- and longer-term Economic Recovery Plan in response to the unrest.
