Examining Prospects of Just Transition and the District Development Model in The Waterberg District: The Case of Eskom and Exxaros Hydrogen Production

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to develop a Just Transition methodology that can be replicated in other coal mines in the country. The project also serves as a pilot case study for implementation into future BRICS research studies regarding the hydrogen economy. The project will: a) Examine the impact of green hydrogen production by Eskom and Exxaro on coal miners and job growth in the mining community. b) Determine linkages of the local mining communities into the hydrogen economy through the District Development Model. c) Assess how repurposing of Eskoms power plants can promote green energy and climate change without disrupting community benefits aligned to the plants such as water and current jobs. d) Gather statistics on the numbers of mine workers, and direct and indirect jobs existing in the coal value chain e) Examine the integration of the DDM in the hydrogen economy.
