Just Energy Transition from Coal to Renewables

Abstract

in response to South Africas energy crisis created by Eskoms lack of capacity to produce electricity efficiently. South Africa currently relies on coal to generate 92% of its electricity and to produce roughly 20% of its liquid fuels. As a result, the public utility Eskom and chemical firm Sasol together account for more than 50% of South Africas greenhouse gas emissions, and 85% of the coal used in the local market by volume. South Africa is currently the world's 14th biggest emitter of climate-warming gases and is heavily reliant on ageing coal-fired power stations for its electricity. The country signalled its intent to decarbonise its coal economy by ratifying its first Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) in 2016 and recently updated in 2022.
