Abstract

This impact evaluation study sought to assess the impacts of alcohol consumption through the lens of the socioeconomic status of the population of Mpumalanga. The study was commissioned by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) as part of efforts to place the province at the forefront of regulation in the sphere of liquor sales and consumption. This report presents findings from the study with the aims of: * Describing liquor consumption patterns in Mpumalanga in relation to the province's demographics; * Correlating consumption patterns according to variables describing socio-economic status (SES) in the province; * Assessing local community opinions about the nature, benefits and harms of liquor consumption; * Determining the impact of liquor consumption at household and individual level in the province; and * Providing recommendations for enhancing measures to prevent, reduce and mitigate harms arising from the consumption of alcohol in Mpumalanga.
