Abstract
This chapter argues for three key strategies for investing in vulnerable children's education and development in South Africa: These include: 1. the expansion of good quality early childhood development programmes 2. the expansion of efforts to improve the nutrition and growth of young children 3. the use of incentives that address opportunity costs and keep vulnerable children in school for as long as possible The chapter concludes that the best way to test and identify optimal investment choices in education is through the use of randomised evaluation studies.-
