Abstract
This book is timely given the endemic governance problems and challenges prevalent in South African municipalities over the past 20 years of democratic order. It clearly and convincingly examines issues that are relevant to the constitutional mandate and performance record of municipalities since the dawn of democracy in South Africa. The book addresses attention grabbing issues such as legal framework of local government, municipal development planning and implementation, public-private partnerships local economic development, co-operatives, traditional leadership and local governance, municipal finance and improved local government capacity for public service delivery. This book is intellectually stimulating and transcends ordinary analysis of local government business. It is a must-read for practitioners, academics, students, community based leaders, traditional leaders, councillors, municipal executives and officials.-
