Abstract

This report is one of the outputs associated with a programme of work commissioned by The Other Foundation and conducted by the HSRC's Democracy Governance and Service Delivery (DGSD) research programme on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). A module of 32 questions capturing different aspects of sexual orientation and gender identity was developed and fielded as part of the twelfth round of the South African Social Attitudes Survey (SASAS) in the last quarter of 2015. The SASAS series has been administered by the HSRC on an annual basis since 2003. It is a nationally representative sample survey of adults aged 16 and older living in private residence. The long term aim of this survey programme is to construct an empirical evidence base that will track and explain the attitudes, beliefs and behaviour patterns of the country's diverse population.
