Dr Lucia Lotter is the Director of the HSRC's Digital Curation unit in the eResearch Knowledge Centre. She holds a PhD in Education and an MEd (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria. At the HSRC she participated in research projects with an educational focus before being joining the IT Directorate. In that capacity she presented training in quantitative and qualitative data analysis software and courses related to the processing of quantitative research data in a unit which she later managed. Following this, Dr Lotter became part of a team tasked to develop the HSRC's Research Information System. She later headed the Systems Development unit in the IT Directorate and in this capacity was responsible for business and system analysis for corporate database systems. She also developed numerous systems for the capturing of research data.

Her current focus is on establishing the technology and processes for the implementation of data curation throughout the organisation - addressing people, process and technology requirements for data preservation and dissemination within the context of a data producer, such as the HSRC.

Dr Lotter is actively involved in capacity building in the area of research data curation in South Africa and participates in the activities of the Network of Data and Information Curation Communities (NeDICC). NeDICC is a Community of Practice consisting of participants from all the major South African universities and Science Councils. She provides training on various data related topics and advices academic / research organisations to implement research data management support services.
