Abstract

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) will implement a program management approach in South Africa for the Global Access Initiative (GAI) to improve access to health care for underserved populations living with diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in partnership with Abt Associates that i) is based on its own experience and expertise in implementing intervention programs, ii) complies with the overarching principles of the WHO global action plan for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), namely throughout the life course, culturally sensitive and equitable approach, empowering people and communities, and using evidence based strategies, iii) is developed within the country National Health Insurance (NHI) framework with multisectoral engagement, iv) complies with the National Department of Health strategic plan , and v) heeds the recent calls for going back to basics in a society wide effort to prevent diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) to address the growing disease burden of NCDs.
