Abstract

The 2017 National HIV Prevalence, Incidence, Behaviour and Communication Survey is the fifth wave in a series of national cross-sectional surveys that have been undertaken every few years since 2002, by a research consortium led by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). The consortium includes local researchers from the South African Medical Research Council, National Institute for Communicable Diseases, Global Clinical & Viral Laboratories and the University of Cape Town. The consortium also includes international researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the United Nations Childrens Fund. Previous studies were conducted in 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2012.
