Abstract
The goal of the abstinence and be faithful among youth (ABY) project at Hope Worldwide was to enhance local responses to HIV and AIDS among youth in South Africa and to prevent HIV infection through encouraging abstinence, faithfulness and avoidance of unhealthy sexual behaviors affecting youth. The goal of the evaluation survey was to obtain baseline levels of awareness, knowledge, attitudes and perceptions (KAP) of learners and young people with respect to abstinence and faithfulness, before the ABY interventions were implemented. The ABY interventions were evaluated using a community survey involving 1,310 learners and young people aged 10-24 years at randomly selected sites in five cities in South Africa. Learners and participants were randomly selected from project sites and schools in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Mthatha. Data were collected from the field using two different types of questionnaires - one for 10 to 14 year-olds and another for 15-24 year-olds. The questionnaires asked questions on the basics of HIV and AIDS, life-skills issues, perceptions and attitudes towards abstinence and faithfulness and the role of the media, role models and workshops in encouraging abstinence and faithfulness.-
