Abstract
This report is an overview of global trends in recycling, defined as the recovery and use of waste. It seeks to identify innovations and explore how these innovations can be used in South Africa. It goes on to investigate the economic benefits of, and current thinking on, recycling, and suggests that waste should be seen as a national resource. The life-cycle of materials is examined in order to explore how the end use of components can be incorporated into designs to minimise waste. In order that less waste ends up on landfills it is imperative that there be a growing awareness of recycling possibilities among users, and that government encourage the process through regulation and incentives.-
