Abstract
The Molteno project is a non-government organisation aiming to improve the literacy levels and teaching processes in the first four years of schooling. The evaluation project is a cohort study tracking learner progress, in view of contextual factors and literacy interventions by Molteno, of a sample of learners from a number of project and control schools in a Free State district. The report covers the baseline study with regard to the evaluations at Grade 1 level during 2003.-
