Current position and details of qualifications, institution(s) and specialties: Dr Cyril Adonis is a senior research specialist in the Developmental, Capable, and Ethical State (DCES) research programme. He holds an MA in Research Psychology from Rhodes University (1999) and a PhD in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from Nova Southeastern University in the US (2011). For his PhD, he was recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship from the US Department of State, as well as an overseas doctoral scholarship from the National Research Foundation (NRF). He specialises in social psychological issues related to peace and conflict, transitional justice, and has a particular interest in forgiveness and reconciliation, intergenerational transmission of trauma, memory and memorialisation ex-combatant re-integration, and collective violence.
Experience and special projects: In addition to having gained teaching experience at both secondary and tertiary levels, he also has extensive experience in conducting policy relevant social scientific research in academia, the public sector, and the NGO sector. Dr Adonis joined the HSRC in 2014 as a post-doctoral fellow in RIA, where he managed the Human and Social Dynamics (HSD) Seminar Series funded by the then Department of Science and Technology. In 2017 he was appointed as Research Specialist in RIA and was among others, project manager for the Innovation for Inclusive Development (IID) Seminar Series. Currently he manages and is co-editor of the IID book project funded by the Department of Science and Innovation and is also leading DCES?s engagement with the Department of Military on the renewal of a five-year memorandum of understanding.
Before joining the HSRC, Dr Adonis was employed as a Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of South Africa (UNISA) from 2013 to 2014. There in addition to conducting research, presenting papers at conferences, and publishing in accredited peer-reviewed journals, he was part of a teaching team that conducted a ten-day research design, and, analysis training programme for UNISA Masters and Doctoral students in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
From 2007 2011, he was employed as a Project Manager in the Transitional Justice Program (TJP) at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR, where the primary focus of his research to develop evidence-based interventions, and support advocacy efforts aimed at reducing violence, advancing human rights, and, fostering reconciliation.
Publications: Dr Adonis has published 4 peer-reviewed book chapters/monographs, and 10 mostly sole-authored scientific articles in both local and international peer-reviewed academic journals. In addition to this, he has authored/co-authored 5 HSRC policy briefs, 4 HSRC review articles, and numerous research reports. He has also acted as an external reviewer for several journals, and he has presented papers at several local and international conferences.
